The definition of being successful differs from one person to another. But the one point that is same across all the definitions is the fact that success means being able to take charge of oneself and to be able to make those decisions that will benefit your future and give life to your plans and goals. But how do you do it? Is there a method that should be followed in order to be successful? Well, there is no fool- proof method for anything, but you can always be prepared and sure about yourself.
Here are 4 steps in the process of improving yourself to attain success:
- Know what you want to be- Many young people make the mistake of never trying to realistically think about what they want to be in their future. Hence, the first step in the process is to imagine the kind of person you would like to be 10 years down the line. It includes your personality, your lifestyle, your company and your career.
- Draft specific goals- Once you have figured out how you want your future- self to be like, analyse that person and start planning backwards. I.e., identify specific ways to help you reach your goal as in which course you want to study, the college you want to study in, the kind of work you want to do etc.
For example, instead of a vague goal such as ‘I want a good education’, set a specific goal, such as ‘I want to study accounts in my intermediate so that I can pursue my further studies in management, from so and so college’. This way you can track your progress in the process of fulfilling your goals.
- Come up with mileposts- After setting goals, you need a yardstick to measure how far you’ve come in achieving those goals. A very easy way to do this is to breakdown the meaning of your accomplishments by creating milestones.
For example, if your goal is crack an entrance exam in a month, you can set your mileposts to solving 3-4 mock tests per week and scoring better every time; studying one hour per day; and getting reviews by your teachers.
- Stay Motivated- Finally, the last step is to remember why you started on this journey to your success. Always remind yourself that you are on your quest to achieve something and it is bigger than yourself and your distractions right now. Stay intrinsically motivated.
You can do this by sharing your goals with your friends or family; the people you trust, so that you will get a push when you need. It is very important to have a support system that will encourage and facilitate you.
